AdReady Tip of the Month (Jan-10): Use Keyword Targeting in your Display Ads

Keyword targeting, or contextual advertising, is basically serving ads to customers based on the content of the page that they're reading. You pick a set of keywords, just like you would with search advertising (like, say, sports-related terms if you're selling sports-related products or services), and an ad network will show your ads to people reading pages that contain those words.

The AdReady platform makes keyword targeting easy—and more importantly, it makes keyword targeting more effective, by helping you find phrases and combinations that you might not have otherwise considered.

For example, if you were doing advertising for a college in Seattle, you'd of course think of terms like "Seattle," "college," "university," "degree," etc. But those aren't all the terms—or even the most likely terms—that show up in content that people actually interested in Seattle colleges are reading. The AdReady platform can help you dig deeper and find more subtle words related to your product—like in this case phrases using "licensed," "practical," "studies," "ranking," "requirements," "edd," etc.

Sign in to the AdReady platform and try it out for yourself. And if you're an AdReady Premium customer, you'll receive expert help to get even more out of this technique.

And the winner for "Best Tech Hire of 2009" is... Karl Siebrecht!

The Flashies

So who was deemed the best new Seattle-area tech hire of 2009? Don Dodge being hired at Google? Nope. William Morrow taking his role at Clearwire? Not him. According to TechFlash readers voting in the annual "Flashies," our President and CEO Karl Siebrecht was the best get of the year.

We couldn't agree more. Congrats, Karl, on your well-deserved win—and congratulations to AdReady for making the hire! Check out the rest of the Flashies winners for even more awesomeness, including Windows 7, Bono's shout-out to Bill Gates, and a $3,500 automatic pancake machine.
